Scent Work

Ten minutes of this will tire your dog out more than an hour's walk
Scent work in Welwyn Garden City. Search, find, indicate. The thinking sport that settles dogs who never seem to switch off.
Your dog does not settle.
You walk them, you come home, and within twenty minutes they are up again, pacing, pestering, staring at you, finding something to chew. You have been told they need more exercise so you have walked further, and all that has happened is you have built a fitter dog who still cannot relax.

So your evenings are not really your own. Neither are your weekends. You are managing a dog rather than enjoying one, and it is wearing you out.

The dogs who struggle most with this are usually the clever ones. Their body is tired. Their brain has not been touched all day.

Scent work uses the part of your dog that a walk never gets near. They learn to search an area, find a specific scent and tell you when they have got it. It is quiet, methodical, and it is genuinely hard work for them. Dogs come out of a scent class and sleep, properly, in a way that miles of walking does not achieve.

It also happens to be the best thing I know for dogs who find other dogs difficult, because your dog works at their own pace with space around them and nothing is asked of them socially.

Who it suits

Dogs who cannot settle. Anxious dogs who find busy classes too much. Reactive dogs, because everyone works with space. Older dogs who cannot do much physically but still need a job. And any dog who simply loves their nose, which is most of them.

What is in the course

Scent detection. Search, find and indicate. This is the foundation and it is where the settling comes from.

Tracking. Following ground scent and indicating on items along the way, so your dog learns to work a trail properly rather than guess.

Search and rescue. Off lead area searching, re-find and indicate, which builds the kind of confidence that carries into everything else.

Obedience and dexterity woven through the whole thing, so your everyday handling improves without it ever feeling like an obedience class.

Levels

Beginners. Start here whatever your dog’s age or history. No experience needed.

Advanced. For dogs who have finished a beginners block and want to go further.

Class size

Seven places per class. That is a hard limit set by the space at the field, not a marketing number, so when a block is full it is full.

Dates and booking

Twelve week course, one class every two weeks. £150
